Wisdom teeth are the third molars that have tendency to develop last in the mouth. Their development is usually completed between the middle teenage years and early twenties, a time traditionally associated with the onset of maturity and the attainment of wisdom.
The wisdom teeth are likely to get decayed and cause problems for adjacent teeth because of their awkward position. Since the wisdom teeth are far back in the mouth, it is difficult to keep them clean. It is common for us to see in our office many wisdom teeth growing sideways to create a food trap to damage the adjacent teeth.
It is important to have proper films like panoramic radiograph or Cone Beam CT to evaluate the important structures around the wisdom teeth to minimize the risk and complication of the procedure. Unfortunately, some complications are irreversible and can affect the comfort of living for a long time.
